Bicol Home Ownership: 4 Tips For Preparing Your House For The Rainy Season

Filipinos are just fond of acting when they have to. Case in point, fixing the roof only when the rain already started to ruin their ceiling, worst yet, damage their things due to roof leaks. There is a better way to prepare for the rainy season and for people living in Bicolandia, this means bad rainy days, and sometimes, rain caused by typhoons.

1. Check your roof even before rain starts falling
Get up there and take a closer look of the condition of your roof. Patch up damaged roof nail heads with water sealant, replace GI sheets if you have to. Check your ceiling as well for water damage as this can be a sign that you have a leak somewhere. Do this early and you will spare yourself the headache when the rain comes. Remember that when the rain comes, your ability to repair it can be seriously impaired and delayed. Get it done early, please.

2. Clear gutters
Clogged gutters will cause rust and irreparable damage. It can also stagnate water in some areas along its length making it a breeding ground for mosquitoes which in turn can mean malaria and dengue. Gutters must channel water from your roof to the spouts and to the culverts unhampered. When this water flow is disrupted somewhere, it creates problems.

Culverts must also be cleared as well to prevent flooding in the neighborhood. Canals must be cleared before the rain starts to prevent water build up when the downpour is heavy. Clogged canals often worsens flooding in subdivision development. Rally your neigbors to clean up before you have to.

3. Check your electrical system
Have you ever wondered why there are a lot of fires during the rainy season? One of the leading causes of fire is when water leaks into bad home electrical fittings. Circuits can short when water is introduced causing sparks and starting fires. Check your wiring in your ceiling and walls and get it fitted correctly to prevent fire hazards. While you are at it, don’t forget to install smoke alarms around your house. That might just give you enough time to escape danger.

4. Be mindful of wooden furniture and floors
If you have treasured wood furniture around, make sure to keep them away from water – away from leaking windows or even storing them in the basement where flood water can get in. If you have wooden floors, make sure ceiling leaks does not get it soaked over long periods of time. Can’t repair the leaking roof yet because of the non-stop rain? Make sure to have buckets around to catch the water from the ceiling, sparing your floor.
